Assistant Vice Chancellor of Human Resources
Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU) invites nominations and applications for the inaugural role of Assistant Vice Chancellor of Human Resources (AVCHR). This is an exciting opportunity for the AVCHR to enhance and strategically elevate the University’s human resources function in support of achieving SIU’s strategic priorities. The SIU community is poised for new leadership in the next AVCHR and will welcome a collaborative, inclusive, and people-centered leader who is energized by the opportunity to build a high-performing and modern human resources function.
A nationally ranked public research university and regional economic catalyst, SIU creates and exchanges knowledge to shape future leaders, improve communities, and transform lives. With over 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students, the University’s six colleges and three professional schools offer more than 200 undergraduate majors, minors and specializations; three associate degrees; and graduate and professional education featuring 69 master’s degrees and 35 doctoral, medical and law degree programs. Since its founding, the University has awarded nearly 300,000 degrees and has about 250,000 living alumni throughout the world.
Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance, this new leader will join SIU at a pivotal moment as the University looks forward with optimism and is catalyzed by the priorities outlined in its ambitious strategic plan Imagine 2030. The AVCHR will be responsible for developing and leading a strategic HR function and will create an inclusive and service-oriented environment, guided by a lens of equity. In addition, this leader will be charged with developing a learning culture through skill-building, tool development, and career path definitions – all through clear and transparent communication. The AVCHR will be charged with developing and executing an HR strategy in support of the overall strategic direction of the University, specifically through effective and proactive talent acquisition and management, change management, performance management, onboarding and succession planning, training and development, benefits, payroll, compensation, HR information systems and employee relations. As the chief people strategist, the AVCHR drives the implementation of policies, practices, and key initiatives to further the institution’s priorities.
The successful candidate is an energetic and creative professional who is both focused on people-centered contemporary human resources delivery and who is inspired by the opportunity to collaborate with the Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance who fosters a coaching culture and who believes in investing in the professional development of divisional leaders. The AVCHR will possess experience leading high-performing teams within a large, complex enterprise, have a strong understanding of the academic mission, and possess exceptional communication and leadership skills. Additionally, the AVCHR will bring broad and modern-day knowledge of all areas of human resources with a demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, as well as emotional intelligence and diplomacy in effectively consulting with a variety of diverse stakeholders. A bachelor’s degree is required, as is progressive HR leadership experience resulting in a comprehensive knowledge of HR operations, programs, technology, and service delivery in a complex unionized organizational setting. A master’s degree is preferred, as is prior experience in higher education, as well as prior experience in the State of Illinois.
